Tonight is the long awaited night of my presentation on blogging to the Writers Guild of Alberta, called the Invasion of the Blog:

Last night as I was putting the finishing touches on my presentation I wrote this note: All the negative stories you hear about on the internet are true, but I have not ever experienced any of them. There seems to be a smear campaign in the media, maybe it’s because they are scared all the bloggers are going to take their jobs—which is probably true.
It is probably true. Bloggers have invaded the world and are an important part of it. Smart businesses everywhere are interested in how to reach bloggers because of the social power we have. Blogs and social media have completely changed the face of the internet and as I have been reflecting on blogging I have come to realize more and more just how amazing it really is.
The internet has a lot of dark sides—creepy people, spam, porn, scams, etc. In my mind, the good of the net far outweighs the bad. The community is amazing. I really can’t get over it. I once read that there wouldn’t be another revolution unless the kids saw it on YouTube first. At the time I thought perhaps that was a really negative, sad thing. But, on second thought, that just shows how powerful the internet is. I have been watching my stats lately, out of curiosity. I have about 60-90 visits a day. Which means that I have the power to reach that many people a day. It’s not a million, but it’s more than any other day. Thankfully, I am using my powers for… the sake of… *awkward*.
Actually, I wanted to share with you that over the past year I have really enjoyed blogging and I am planning / already am taking it to the next level. The next level will be going professional, slowly. rockstarpoet will always be here and will evolve naturally. I won’t be changing this blog to anything that it’s not. But I have been hired to do professional blogging for a company and I will be starting up a professional (blog) writing blog in the near future. I will let you know more as soon as these things are official.
There are a lot of opportunities available through blogging and I want to search them out. I want you to search them out too. This is a rich community and not just in a monetary way. Speaking of monetary, I am getting paid for my presentation tonight! I think I am going to head straight over to Uneetee.com and buy this shirt:
I also watched this video again about 4 times last night. I still find it really inspiring. If I had a projector tonight I would definitely play this video.

Update: The went really well. It was a small, intimate crowd but enough people to make it an interesting conversation. I was worried that I wouldn’t have enough material for an hour; however, I ended up talking/answering questions for about an hour and a half. Good fun night. Thanks for the invite WGA.
