It is a slow day at work today so I am taking some time to research cat food. I have often thought about looking into the quality cat food. After learning about the massive pet food recall on the news—I thought I better take a look around. I had many 12 hour days last week and I am still feeling a little burnt-out. So sitting around is nice. Anyways, back to the topic at hand.
Currently, we are feeding JD Royal Canin. Which, overall, seems to be a fairly standard cat food. Probably a bit higher quality than most (and more expensive). It’s not IAMS or made by the company with the recall so that is comforting—right? Although, we did have some of it (I think) from Wal-Mart which we got rid of (some wet food). I tried to find a good site with reviews and I found a decent one but I am still unsure. I think I have learned that apparently Innova is a good cat food. However, how should I know? I hate the feeling that you have a responsibility to do right by your cat, yet have no idea what is exactly right. JD? What type of food do you like? Any food? I thought so, fatty! Apparently, there is ash in the food? My dad seemed to know how to figure out how much is in it, but I don’t have a clue. I don’t see anything that says ash.
Suggestions?
I feed my cat Royal Canin too. (Indoor 27) That’s because that’s what she was fed at the humane society, so I just continued feeding her the same stuff.
I’ve been looking for a cat food that helps control hairballs and tartar. But no such two-in-one exists. Tell me if you come up with anything in your research.
Yeh, we use the same (Indoor 27). Actually, we had the diet stuff, but he just ended up being more hungry. However, I combined it with the Indoor and it seems to be working out okay.
Ash is simply mineral matter (non-organic), they usually list protein, fat, fibre, and water content, everything else is ash. So to figure the ash content you start with 100 and minus what they list. There isn’t a lot of difference in how they make the food since they all cost pretty much the same – some of the best quality foods are made (or mixed locally) they save on shipping costs. Picking the right food is more a matter of seeing how your pet digests it (look for consistent color and qualtity poop!) and the appearance of its coat. I know, more information than you really want!
You’re only repeating Mr. Matt Good from his blog!
I caught you sneaking!
hahahahah
Quiet Leif or I will start censoring you!
No, we didn’t have any Wal-Mart brand food. We have some cheap Petcetra brand food that we should get rid of. It looks gross.
Hey, you can try what we do and see if ya have any positive results: feed ‘um dog food, I suggest you buy the 18kg. size bag, its the most economical. (I’m sure theres probly room to store it in the kitchen) tee hee. Our three cats pick out the smallest peices of the three sizes that are in the Pedigree dog food. They seem to be surviving. Have a good one. Cheryl
