The Hunt for the Red October

A few things today, because I realize I haven’t posted anything.

The Hunt for the Red October

I watched The Hunt for the Red October for the first time, in full, last night. For the majority of those who are unaware, this movie is my mother’s favourite. She has a weird thing for sub movies and I don’t quite get it. My parents own this movie and have owned it for a long time. I suspect the reason that I have never sat down and watched it all the way through is that the only time I would see it being played is when mom watched it. And my mom loves to recite the script, she has it memorized, as the movie plays. Thus, I never fully watched it with her as she did her best at Sean Connery. Let them sing. I enjoyed the film.

Bailing Bucket

The specific reason I haven’t posted anything is because there are two big posts I need to write. One is to mourn and celebrate the life of my wonderful Honda Civic. The second is putting all the video, pictures of the house online. Both require time and I haven’t done anything with them.

I am aware it’s been a month or so since we moved in and I should’ve done this sooner. But it’s been a crazy month and I have just started to sleep semi-normally again. There’s a lot of content on the way and I just need the time and desire to post it.

The F’ing BBC

A while ago, I wrote a post on Epiblogger about Nationality and Blogging—wondering about the affect my nationality has on me/us as a blogger. I received a bizarre comment from Axel from the BBC in London asking me to participate in yesterday’s program of World Have Your Say.

The program was discussing the affects, reasons and necessity of nationality. Apparently, I had something to add to this discussion. After a few calls from Axel, Chloe and one of their engineers in London (UK) I was on air… globally… for about five minutes. I was incredibly nervous and I hope whatever I said made some sense. I said something about the importance of nationality to Canadians and how, more often than not, we aren’t sure who we are as a nation, but we know who we aren’t (Americans, British, etc). I had that thought prepared and I was asked one other question and I fumbled a bit. But it was fun and very bizarre, though I don’t suppose I should expect much different from the net. The net is truly a great communal tool.

Ubiquitous

Finally, if you are even remotely interested in the internet and trends, a huge breakthrough happened and it’s named Ubiquity.

Unless the Laker Game Was On

Great song by Say Hi To Your Mom that was introduced to me by a friend on Twitter (who I met last week IRL at a Twitup):

The Farting Preacher

Apparently this is an old-time internet favourite, but I haven’t seen it. Who doesn’t love to fart? Who doesn’t love a ridiculously dramatic preacher? Hilarious.

Doing My Part

In my continuing attempts to be environmentally friendly last night I shaved my head (again). The benefits of shaving your head: Cooler (I mean I look cool), not as warm (don’t need the A/C on, not that I have A/C to turn on), and … I’m awesome. Also, instead of shaving my head inside, Leah buzzed it outside so that my hair wouldn’t just go into the garbage but into mother nature and nurture the forests and also in your soup. Therefore, do not eat soup outside for the next few weeks or my hair might blow into it.

The Funny Family

The Soveran’s are funny people. There are people who believe that my mom is funny. I am generally not one of those people. However, I can admit that my mom can hold an audience and has a good public persona. My dad, for those who know him well, is funny in the most painful ways. I think light torture is his brand of humor. And I am, of course, a natural comedic talent. But there has always been the question of when Emily, my younger sister, was going to become funny.

Her whole life Emily has never been funny. Sure, she tries. She’s tough and sarcastic. But not really funny. But I think she has finally matured into a funny Soveran. I am happy to announce that Emily made me laugh pretty hard today with this picture of my dad and the caption below it on Facebook:

Doug Soveran

Just a man and his grapes.

Real Spoken Word

As I have mentioned before, I very rarely have any patience for spoken word poets. Reasons for that aren’t really important. But when spoken word is done well, it’s amazing. I heard this song by the Flobots the other day and Ben just posted the song and it reminded me I wanted to know more about it. I think these guys might be more hip hop, but poetry is poetry and this song is great. A great progression. I would suggest seeking out the video because it’s very interesting.

So here is Flobots’ “Handlebars”.

Your shot of Rhett

In case you really wanted to hear from me today and then arrived and realized I hadn’t posted anything… well you are in luck, because I posted on Christmas Future about My Story of Stuff.

Thank you!

We have spent many hours at the new house this weekend getting it ready for the hardwood guys to come in. Rhett and I could not have done it alone! Our friends, Ian and Jana Elford and my co-worker and good friend, Susan Mate, joined us yesterday in pulling up carpet, staples and tack board. It was hard work, painstaking, and back-breaking…and those three really stuck it out with us! Rhett and I are so blessed to have such great friends. And we know that we are now at the top of their list of friends to help them move, paint, pack….etc. And I’m happy to be there! Also, our friend, Ryan Matchullis, of Brother’s Painting was there on Friday and all day Saturday painting ceilings and prepping trim. Ryan paints professionally so we’ve decided to have him come in and coordinate all the painting to take place. I’ve sort of felt at times that we’re being extravagant having a professional painter come in to help us on our first house. But I now know there is just no way we would’ve gotten it all done in a timely matter by ourselves. We’ve really been blessed to have such wonderful help on this new adventure. Rhett’s parents come into town today and will be staying at the new house so they can let in the floor guys tomorrow morning while Rhett and I are off to work. Again, what a blessing to have help and a big thank you to you all!!

Possession Day!

I am going to keep an update of all things that happen today—possession day of our new house.

9:06 AM: Called from the lawyers. Everything is moving forward. We will have the house by noon.

10:34 AM: I have butterflies in my stomach. Feeling nervous.

11:27 AM: Going to pickup Leah and then off to get some keys.

1:10 PM: Back at work, I have a key and I am a homeowner. I was really nervous before, but it’s all past now. This was actually quite anti-climatic. So I don’t know if I am going to post anymore about it today.

A Nod to WorldVision

I had a meeting yesterday (at work) with a charitable organization that had questions about social media/networking and how to reach out to their audience. I was asked if there are any other charities that are doing anything like this and, of course, I mentioned ChristmasFuture. But, I think a special nod needs to be given to WorldVision for this great video. This video is 100x more powerful than a celebrity telling me I need to help. Check it out and maybe, if I could suggest it, see how you can help. In any case, this is a great example of a viral video.
